So Many Types of Acne Scars

One of the devastating effects of acne is the long-term scarring that can remain. The scars are caused by inflammation and infection which damages the skin and subcutaneous structures. Acne scars vary from person to person. The scarring may have different shapes, sizes, or colors. In some cases, healthy skin is replaced by fibrous scar tissue. In other cases, damage to surface skin cells results in discoloration and an uneven skin tone. The following is a look at some of the various types of acne scars.
Many Types of Acne Scars
Depressed (Pitted) Acne Scars:
Depressed or pitted scars are the most common among acne sufferers. This type of scarring is usually the result of inflammatory acne. There are several different types of depressed scarring:
  • Rolling Scars: Rolling scars create broad depressions in the skin. The edges of the scar are rounded and sloping. The skin has a rolling appearance when there are several of these scars in one area.
  • Boxcar Scars: Boxcar scars also leave broad depressions in the skin. Unlike rolling scars, the edges of a boxcar scar are steep and defined.
  • Icepick Scars: Icepick scars may look like a large, empty pore. The scarring is deep and narrow, similar to a wound caused by an icepick.
Raised Acne Scars: Raised acne scars are created by excess scar tissue at the site of the acne.
  • Hypertrophic and Keloid Scars: Hypertrophic and keloid scarring is less common than other types of acne scarring. These scars form when excess scar tissue creates a dense, rubbery nodule on the skin.
Discoloration and Pigmentation Scarring:  Instead of fibrous scar tissue, acne may result in long-term discoloration of the skin.
  • Hyper-pigmentation: One common type of discoloration is known as hyper-pigmentation. In hyper-pigmentation, acne leaves the skin with a blotchy or freckled appearance. Hyper-pigmentation results when injury to an area causes an increase in melanocytes (the cells that produce the melanin that gives our skin its color) or an overproduction of melanin from existing cells.
  • Erythema: Erythema, also known as permanent redness, results when small capillaries near the skin’s surface area damaged or permanently dilated. This type of scarring is relatively common among individuals with lighter skin tones.
Our lasers are a revolutionary new way to rejuvenate your aged and acne damaged skin. This innovative treatment is a new way of attaining effective skin rejuvenation with a quick, non-invasive procedure that requires little downtime. The skin is stimulated by the formation of new collagen, the protein that gives skin youthful, healthy-looking volume. Only problem areas of your skin are treated without impacting healthy skin tissue. The loss of skin volume (usually as the result of sun damage) is what causes lines and wrinkles to form.
